Kawasaki ER6n review

Kawasaki_ER6nKawasaki has taken quite a while replacing their old trusty workhorse and beginners bike the ER5. So I expected them to come up with something that could maybe knock Yamaha’s FZ6 off its pedestal. In terms of modern design and technique it’s a big leap ahead from the ER5, but is it a good bike?
My absolute first thought was that the handlebars are very narrow. But otherwise it was quite comfy – everything sitting where you would expect. Heading off, I found no issues with the brakes and suspension. You have to get a bike under your skin before you can really start to test the brakes. But for a beginner’s bike, I’m sure they are more than capable.
The Kawasaki ER6n feels very light and with its 174 kg it is also 20 kg lighter than what I’m used to. Which would be just fine, but my impression was that the weight combined with the narrow handlebars made it very wind sensitive. It was a bit windy that day, and once when I overtook a car and gave the throttle an extra notch, it didn’t feel comfortable at all. No doubt the engine would like to play, but the steering was holding back on the fun. I certainly didn’t experience that on the FZ6.
Kawasaki_ER6n_sideviewLooks wise I think the bike is pretty sharp. Rear suspension spring tugged in asymmetrical on the right hand side, Buell style exhausts hiding beneath the engine, not your average square swing arm. There are a lot of nice details on the bike, except for the headlight and gauge area that looks like they forgot to give it gauges and had to come up with a quick fix. I wonder if you can pick up Zeta Rocks on the clock radio Kawasaki put on top of that fly screen. Seems the good old classic round motorcycle headlight is seriously going out of style.
I’m going to be nice and give it three helmets, because of the long awaited design update and the side by side twin engine. It’s not Kawasaki’s fault that they don’t know round headlights and wide handlebars is the coolest thing next to the Tesla Coil. For a beginner’s bike, it’s not a bad choice at all

Honda VTX 1800 – The biggest V-twin I’ve ever ridden.

After my trip to France in the summer 2004 it was time to have the bike serviced and for the second time that year I headed down to my mechanic Holtug MC. After talking in the shop for a while as they started to work on my bike I convinced the owner (or was it him that convinced me) to let me try a used Honda VTX 1800 he had just taken in.
That is one huge mother of a bike and it had all the bells and whistles; wind screen, studded saddlebags and a pair of Cobra exhausts. The bike was from 2001 and had 34.000 km (21.000 miles) on the clock. But the previous owner had taken so good care of it that it looked brand new.
I’ve tried a few of the bigger cruisers and I guess I’ve gotten used to the road capabilities (or lack there of) of that motorcycle type . But the VTX 1800 actually rides, even though with its almost 350 kg (770 lbs) it’s quite a hand full. Well you don’t feel as if you’ve been shot out of a canon when twisting the throttle, but it pulls away real nice. Actually I found my self cruising slowly down the back roads with 110-120 km/t (75 MpH). But I swear Mr. Police it felt like I was going 80 km/t (50 MpH).
The VTX 1800 is very high-tech for a cruiser, having both hydraulic clutch, upside-down fork, cast aluminium wheels and a Dual Combined Brake Pressure Equalization System. The Brake system means that when pressing the back brake some of the pressure is channelled to the front brakes as well. All in all these features makes the VTX a very easy handling and modern cruiser.
There’s no doubt this bike could take you to the end of the world and back with 160 km/t (100 MpH) which is not the case for many of the cruisers out there. But then again should it be? If you are in the market for one of the big eastern cruisers, this bike deserves to be on your short-list. It rides and sounds insane and is technically more advanced than the Motor Company competitors, but it lacks the 100 years of history. So I guess it’s a question of being a HD fan or not, cause the price is almost up there with the Milwaukee’s.

Honda Stateline (2010)

Honda Stateline Overview

Featuring long, low lines that embody what cruising is all about, the 2010 Honda Stateline blends two worlds of motorcycling style: traditional looks plus progressive elements. The deeply valanced fenders arc downward in classic retro style, yet the all-new rolling chassis and overall lines bring a fresh look to the class. Add to that the deep throaty rumble of a big V-twin engine with Honda's Programmed Fuel Injection and that classic big V-twin power pulse, and you have a machine that's the perfect choice for cruising--any time you want.

The 2010 Honda Stateline is available with or without ABS in Black and Candy Dark Red. You will find the Stateline in Honda dealerships in February of 2010 and the ABS model will later be available in March. The MSRP for the 2010 Stateline is listed at $11,699.00 while the ABS model is at $12,699.00.

THE 1997 HARLEY-DAVIDSON SPORTSTER

In 30 years of riding, I have discovered some things about motorcycles. In this review I am going to discuss one of my favorite bikes, the Harley-Davidson Sportster. (The example pictured above is a 1997 XLH equipped with some of the touring accessories mentioned below.)
No two ways about it, to me the original is still the best, and the Harley-Davidson Sportster is my top choice in the "standard" class. Lots of other riders have voted with their pocket books and agree with me: the Sportster models are the best selling line of motorcycles in America.
Like most standards, the Sportster is a very versatile motorcycle. Take one Sportster, add Harley's flush mount leather saddlebags, sport windshield, deluxe touring seat, low sissy bar with passenger back rest, sport rack, overnight rack bag, and a tank bag, and you have a "sport touring Sportster," a pretty competent bike for weekend trips, without seriously compromising its innate Sunday morning ride capability. The touring seat and passenger back rest make the Sportster a very comfortable bike for riding double.
Today's Sportster looks very much like the XLCH Sportster of 1958 (In the Harley alphabet, all Sportster models have always started with "XL"), but in fact every part of the bike is different. The wheels, brakes, forks, lights, frame, engine, transmission, electrical system, gas tank, seat, oil tank, swing arm, rear shocks, everything is changed, modern, but retains its traditional looks. Harley-Davidson believes in evolution, not revolution. Sometimes this confuses people, who believe that Harleys are obsolete retro-bikes. Not true. After over 95 years in the motorcycle business (H-D is the oldest motorcycle company in the world.), the Motor Company has learned a thing or two about what works in the real world.
They have learned a thing or two about customer loyalty, too, and how to keep it. Years ago, Honda ran ads saying "You meet the nicest people on a Honda." Today, you meet the nicest people on a Harley. Part of the reason is the Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.), a factory sponsored club for all Harley-Davidson owners. Everyone who buys a new H-D motorcycle gets a free first year membership in the National H.O.G. Most also join their local H.O.G. chapter, sponsored by their local dealer. H.O.G. gives enthusiasts of both sexes and all ages, and from all walks of life, a chance to meet with other Harley owners, go on rides together, swap ideas, and generally have a good time. There are National and local rallies that you really should not miss. H.O.G. chapters also do a lot of excellent charity work in their local communities. You really do meet the nicest people on a Harley.
All modern Sportsters come with Harley-Davidson's unit construction Evolution V-twin engine, bored to either 883cc (54 cubic inches) or 1200cc (74 cubic inches). The former is easily converted to the latter, since the stroke is identical, by the addition of new pistons and jugs (or by just boring out the 883 cylinders), and slightly modifying the 883 heads. As I write this, the H-D kit to change an 883 into a 1200 is under $900, including installation by your Harley-Davidson dealer. Either engine size gives you easy control of instant torque for real world riding situations. I think of the 1200, especially, as a "velvet hammer."
While we are on the subject of engines, it is no secret that the Motor Company delivers these bikes in a very modest (EPA) state of tune. The factory rated horsepower/torque at the crankshaft, which is about 57/53 (883cc) and 66/72 (standard 1200cc), can be increased by about 7 hp just by switching to a H-D Screaming Eagle low restriction air filter, H-D Screaming Eagle low restriction mufflers, and re-jetting the carburetor. These changes are recommended by almost all H-D dealers world wide, and do not affect your new bike warrantee. For this reason, you will seldom encounter a truly stock Sportster on the street, or one that isn't faster than the magazine road tests would lead you to believe.
Any Sportster is the most basic and honest of motorcycles; a work in progress, a beautiful painting (the finish is absolutely first class) waiting for you to add the final details. That is why you will probably never see two Sportsters exactly alike; everybody adds the finishing touches they personally desire. This is particularly true of the basic XLH 883 and XLH 1200 models. For a complete list of the modifications and accessories added to the XLH 883 test bike pictured above, click here to see the H-D Sportster Accessory List.
There are also three somewhat more stylish "cruiser" models, the XLH 883 Hugger, and the XL 883C and 1200C Customs, all with lowered suspensions. These are particularly suitable for those of shorter stature (seat height only 27.12 inches). The 1200 Custom is the most lavishly finished of all Sportsters, with chrome engine cases and many extras straight from the factory.
The final model is my favorite of the line, the XL 1200S Sport. The Sportster Sport is a return to the original XLCH concept of the hot rod Sportster. Parenthetically, the XLCH Sportster was the bike for which the term "super bike" was originally coined (legend has it that the "CH" stands for either "California Hot" or "Competition Hot"). The new Sport model comes with a little more of everything that has always made the Sportster great, an up rated fully adjustable suspension at both ends, up rated double floating disc front brake, and a 15% higher output 1200cc V-twin engine with lightened flywheels and Buell heads. This makes it the quickest Sportster of them all, with a quarter mile time in the 12.9 second range. Like the standard Sportsters, it retains a generous 6.7inch ground clearance and 36/40 degree lean angles (right/left respectively). Plus outstanding stability, moderate weight for its displacement (all Sportsters weigh under 500 pounds), and the low center of gravity which makes any Sportster a pleasure to ride. Its sportier riding position and understated styling make the Sport the meanest looking of all Sportsters, every inch the street fighter that it is.
Final touches that make any Sportster a top choice in its class include self canceling turn signals, a superior control layout, hydraulic self-adjusting overhead valves, electronic ignition, cast alloy wheels with tubeless tires (laced wheels are optional), halogen headlight, vacuum operated fuel valve, and maintenance free belt drive. The highest resale value in its class does not hurt, either. In fact, many late model used Sportsters are sold for nearly 100% of their new price!
The best thing about any Sportster is riding it. Man, this is an easy bike to ride! Very willing and very forgiving of small errors. All that torque from its big V-twin engine makes it hard to stall in town, and teriffic for passing on the highway. The Sportster's low center of gravity and excellent basic frame and suspension geometry make it very stable and easy to steer at all speeds. It does not flick from side to side like a sport bike, but it steers precisely into turns. And its generous lean angle means that if you enter a corner a little bit faster than you should have, don't panic, just push a little harder on the handlebar (counter steer), and your Sporty will lean that much farther and whip you through without muss or fuss. I just love a forgiving bike that will save me when I mess up! The disc brakes, upgraded in 2000 with 4-piston calipers, are positive and progressive without being grabby. The positive shifter gets you the gear you select every time, although it makes a little noise doing it. The brake and clutch levers are the most comfortably shaped in all of motorcycling. The final belt drive is quiet and clean, needs no maintenance, doesn't jack the bike around like some shaft drives, and is as light as a chain.
The Sportster is a bike equally suited to both the city streets and country roads. The scenic route, always the best choice on any motorcycle, is what this bike seems to have been designed for.
Don't believe the stories you may have read about that bugaboo, vibration. Here is the straight copy: a Sportster is very pleasant cruising at all speeds up to about 60 mph, surprisingly so. In fact, its a blast. And the 883 is even a little smoother than the 1200. From about 60 up to about 67 mph (in 5th gear), vibration gradually becomes intrusive, mostly through the handlebars. I like to cruise at about 65 on the freeway. By 70 mph vibration becomes uncomfortable (to me) for sustained cruising. A modern Sportster is certainly smoother than the 1969 BSA Lightning I rode for many years, and none of us complained about vibration from our Triumphs and BSA's back in those days. If you want a Harley for sustained 70+ mph freeway cruising, look at an FXD (Dyna) or FLH (Touring) model; but for the scenic route, you can't beat a Sportster.
I don't know what the top speed of a 1200 Sportster is, but I will tell you that the first time I tested its "passing power" by rolling it all the way on at 65 mph, I got to 105 mph, in what seemed like a very short time indeed, before I could get it rolled off again! Whatever its ultimate top speed is, I would say it is real adequate.
No other bike in its class holds its value like a Sportster. Or looks like a Sportster. Or sounds like a Sportster. Or feels like a Sportster. In a world full of me-too and look alike bikes, the Sportster is the real thing.

Harley-Davidson Swings to Loss, Shares Sputter

The recession continued to hammer Harley-Davidson (HOG) in the fourth quarter as the iconic motorcycle maker reported a wider-than-expected loss. The latest results mark the sixth consecutive quarter in which Harley has failed to meet Wall Street estimates. Shares fell sharply on the news.

Harley, whose high-end bikes cost as much as $25,000, has seen shipments and sales tumble as the recession has made expensive, discretionary purchases too much of a reach for too many of its customers. The company has been going through a brutal restructuring this year amid the downturn, but continued to miss Street forecasts by a wide margin.

For the three months ended Dec. 31, the Milwaukee company swung to a net loss of $218.7 million, or 94 cents, from a year-ago profit of $77.8 million, or 34 cents. Excluding discontinued operations, Harley reported a loss of 63 cents a share, missing analysts' average forecast by a stunning 31 cents, according to Thomson Reuters.

Sluggish demand caused revenue to tumble 40% to $764.5 million from $1.28 billion a year ago. The top-line figure essentially matched analysts' view, but gross margin contracted sharply amid a 53% decline in shipments.

"Our full-year 2009 results were affected by the difficult economy, as well as the planned actions we took that resulted in restructuring charges of $224 million," said Chief Executive Keith Wandell in a statement. "We are confident we have made the right decisions for our future, and we are executing our strategy with focused intensity."

William Blair & Co. analyst Sharon Zackfia told clients ahead of the report that Harley is likely several quarters away from achieving positive sales trends in the U.S.

For the full year the company reported a net loss of $55.1 million, or 24 cents, versus year-ago earnings of $654.7 million, or $2.79. Revenue declined 23% to $4.29 billion from $5.58 billion a year ago.

It's all relative

I still like these. Neat fix for the ugly tank lower seam, chrome trim!

It's all relative.

With no riding possible due to the rain I have been surfing the various motorcycle forums.

A common thread found goes something like "Did you hear about the latest method to issue speeding fines-: Unmarked cars/motorcycles/cameras, Time/distance devices" "Yeah I am going to quit road riding and just do track days"

It is unfortunate that some more riders don't realise,

For many the speed needed to enjoy riding increases the more race focused a motorcycle you ride however the enjoyment is no less on bikes that need not be ridden as fast.

Ride your local mountain road on a race/sports type motorcycle and you will most certainly feel a need to go a certain pace to enjoy the ride. The combination of finely focused machinery and uncompromising rider position in the hands of an experienced rider will not only allow the rider to double the corner advisory speed (or more) but also make riding slower less rewarding and uncomfortable.

On the same road the rider of a non race/sports motorcycle can gain the same enjoyment at a lesser pace. In fact that rider will also enjoy some of the corners that the race/sports type rider cannot due to pace. They also will experience the same elsewhere thus whole routes that were not fun on a supersports bike become enjoyable. And I don't just mean try a cruiser, try everything that's not primarily made for a racetrack.

I expect many people will not understand, if someone had told me when I was riding sports bikes this same thing I would have ignored them. How can a less sports focused bike deliver as much. Well it can as long as your riding for yourself and not for the image you think a certain type of bike, outfit or the way you ride is viewed by others.

Moto Guzzi Griso 8v SE

I like this new version of the Griso from Moto Guzzi.
Already a bike with many distinct styling details this Special Edition has a classic colour scheme, spoked wheels, blacked out engine and nicely stitched tan leather seat to round out the visuals.

Tsukigi racing exhaust for the Ninja 250R

Selecting a Motorcycle Exhaust-System was never been so difficult, most riders see the Exhaust-System as the easiest way to increase the power of their motorcycle. A survey under riders revealed that most motorcyclists planned to buy an alternative exhaust system for their bike in the next year.

One company Tsukigi Racing has been designing and building aftermarket performance motorcycle exhaust-systems. Tsukigi Racing founded 37-years ago, and now for 10-years active in the Thai motorcycle market has introduced a complete performance exhaust-system for the in Thailand popular Kawasaki Ninja 250R.

The Tsukigi Racing Exhaust-System for the Kawasaki Ninja 250R is probably the easiest aftermarket pipe to install bolting on in a mere 10 minutes. When viewing the end can from the side, people either loved or hated the pipe. The lack of a heat shield can be unpleasant for a pillion-rider especially if not wearing closed shoes.

The Tsukigi Racing Kawasaki Ninja 250R Exhaust-System is loud, aggressive but strangely the sound was not irritating, the exhaust note never felt as extreme.

The mechanics from Tsukigi Racing claimed that the aftermarket system would provide a 2 to 3 horsepower performance gain. We where not able to confirm this, riding the bike let us believe that the power gain was more, especially in the lower rev segment.

Overall we where very impressed by, what could be, the first Thai aftermarket product for the Kawasaki Ninja 250R.

Suzuki Hayabusa and Kawasaki Ninja ZX14

Distressed Brown Leather Low Profile Solo Seat Bag
The Street Bob has taken on a whole new look from its stock form. Now it's ready to roll for a weekend trip dressed with vintage-styled luggage and seats.
The Motor Company always seems to have its feelers out for cool new trends, which is great because riders consistently search for ways to make their bikes unique. One way to stand out from the pack is with the new line of Distressed Brown Leather goods from Harley-Davidson.
Distressed Brown Leather Low Profile Solo Seat No Bag
When the parts arrived, we got started with the project. Installation was relatively easy and we only needed the basic tools to give the Street Bob a different look.

2 To get started, we removed the stock seat and disconnected the negative battery cable.

3 Then we unplugged the turn signal harnesses from the taillamp assembly underneath the fender by removing the plastic plug holding the wires in place. The male ends were unplugged and the pins from the plugs were taken out to slide the stock chrome turn signal mounts off since they won't be reused.

4 For this application, you'll need the Turn Signal Relocation kit ($84.95 for '09 FXDB, pricing varies by model). The kit repositions the turn signals farther back with the two black relocation brackets, new fender support brackets, zip-ties for securing the wiring to the relocation brackets, and hardware.
